Every once in a while I’m reminded that my girl Allison has given up blogging and it makes me a little sad. While I fully understand it, I selfishly regret it. Today was one of those days because I finally allowed myself to start thinking about something that both Alison and I find great satisfaction in: planning a packing list.
Now, if you’ve been around for a while, it might surprise you that I derive satisfaction in creating a packing list because I’ve been honest that I so often end up throwing things in a suitcase hours before a flight.
What can I say? I’m a complex creature.
It’s true that I get a lot of enjoyment out of thinking about a long-term date (we’re 26 days away from travel and packing is all I’ve been thinking about all day long) and my zest wanes the closer the trip gets. So, while I think a lot about it this far in advance, but a couple of weeks from now, it’ll seem totally boring so I’ll blow it off until I’m cutting it super close.
It’s a vicious circle.
I was thinking about Allison tonight because she once posted a great packing strategy. It covers all the basics and leaves a little room to improvise.
You can find the post here. And take a spin around her blog while you’re over there. She’s a delight!
I’ve been thinking a lot about creating my own standard packing list. Perhaps that’s a project I’ll use to pass some of the time between now and our vacation. The again, I may never think of it again.
Do you (could you) use a standard list for prepping for vacation? Do you make a list before you start or do you just make it up as you go? How soon is too soon to start packing?
